Joachim Burdack Professor of Geography at the University of Leipzig and senior researcher at the Leibniz-Institute for Regional Geography (IfL). He studied Geography, History and Political Sciences at the Freie Universität Berlin and Geography at Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana, USA). He received a Master of Arts (M.A.) at Indiana University (1978), a Dr. rer. nat. (PhD) at the Freie Universität Berlin in 1984 and finished his Habilitation at Bamberg University in 1991. After working in projects in urban redevelopment in Berlin (West), he taught at the Bamberg University from 1982 to 1993. Joachim Burdack joined the Leibniz-Institute for Regional Geography in 1993 as researcher. Since 2002 he functions as assistant head of the department of Regional Geography of Europe and as coordinator for urban and metropolitan studies. He was named apl. Professor for Geography at Bamberg University in 1997 and at the University of Leipzig in 2000.
