Dr. John Gibney
Centre for Urban and Regional Studies
John Gibney is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies and has returned to academic life following over ten years at senior manager and Director level roles in Local Government and Development Agencies in Birmingham, Kent, Wales, France and Brussels. John’s practice work covered major EU funded projects and the development and management of a broad range of interregional economic development initiatives in the UK and North West Europe. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a member of the Regional Studies Association and the University Association of Contemporary European Studies. John is Director of the CURS post-experience programme ‘Strategic Leadership in Economic Development, Planning and Regeneration’.
John’s research and teaching interests cover a range of regional economic development issues including:
Recent projects have included work on the impact of the Central Technology Belt in the West Midlands and a wide range of industry sector/cluster projects for urban and regional development purposes. This work has been undertaken for a range of agencies including Local Government, Development Agencies, the West Midlands Higher Education Association, Business Links, the British Council and the EU. Current research activity covers the Digital Divide, the competitiveness of EU metropolitan regions and comparative Anglo-French high technology cluster policy.
