The Faculty of Sociology is one of the 50 Faculties of Sociology in Italy and, even though the Faculty of Sociology was established only three year ago, it is the most important in the North. The Faculty includes a research centre: Monitoring Urban Poverty (MUP). Since 2001 the Faculty has organized a European Ph.D. programme in ‘Urban and Local Studies’, in collaboration with the Institut des Sciences Politiques of the University-Paris, The London School of Economics and Political Science – London, and the Humboldt Universität-Berlin. The main research areas of interest concern: labour market and labour policy; social mobility; territorial analysis and urban phenomena; poverty and the welfare state; governance and social policies; time and quality of urban life; gender studies; indicators for social analysis; and visual sociology. The Faculty is aiming to promote and carry out both national and international projects, with particular attention being given to comparative aspects and analysis. In this sphere, many members of MUP and the faculty participate in international networks and in European projects (4th- and 5th- Framework, European Science Foundation, COST, IFDO). Research has been carried out for local governments and ministries and most of this research has been based on theory appropriate to territorial relations, with a particular focus on policy and practice action.
